Multi Rugby For All

About Multi Rugby for All

The Multi Rugby For All project was a European initiative aimed at promoting the social and cultural inclusion of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through an innovative multidisciplinary programme combining rugby and judo within primary schools during curricular hours. By bringing children with ASD together with their classmates in an inclusive sporting environment, the project used the educational and social values of both disciplines—such as cooperation, respect, self-control and inclusion—to support motor, cognitive, emotional and social development. Activities were adapted to the individual needs of participants and delivered by specialised coaches with the support of psychologists with expertise in autism.

Through school-based activities, specialised training, research and awareness-raising actions, Multi Rugby For All sought to develop and validate an innovative, transferable and sustainable model for inclusive sport. The programme involved 15 school classes and more than 300 children, including 15 children with ASD, while more than 50 instructors received direct training and over 200 future instructors were reached through an online learning platform. The project also developed resources to raise awareness of autism and help families identify rugby and judo clubs offering inclusive and autism-friendly activities.

Main Objectives

  • Promote the social inclusion of children with ASD through sport, creating opportunities for meaningful participation alongside their peers;
  • Enhance the educational values of rugby and judo as tools for personal, social and collective development;
  • Develop and test innovative, transferable and sustainable methodologies for inclusive sport within school and educational contexts;
  • Strengthen the competences of rugby and judo coaches and instructors in autism, inclusive practices and the adaptation of physical activities;
  • Improve cooperation between schools, sports organisations, families, coaches and specialised professionals to create more accessible pathways into sport for children with ASD;
  • Evaluate the impact of the multidisciplinary programme and contribute to the development and dissemination of evidence-based practices for inclusive sport.
