JIDP

About Judo for Intellectual Disability

An innovative project whose aim is to use sport to promote the social and cultural integration of adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID). Research has shown that participation in judo can have social and health benefits for people with ID. With this potential in mind, this project was carried out with the aim of expanding the presence and reach of judo programmes for people with ID to the greatest extent possible to make them accessible to the greatest number of people.

The project will promote a healthy eating strategy alongside physical activity in an effort to improve the quality of life of teenagers with ID. To this end, a smartphone app will be created in the context of the project, and this tool will be applicable for use with other sports in future projects.

The project will train adapted judo instructors and help expand their knowledge, leading to a cascade effect of benefits after the intervention is completed. This will be achieved through training meetings and through the creation of a virtual training platform that will help ensure the training of future adapted judo instructors. JIDP can count on the participation of eight partners from six European countries. The role of six of the partners will be to develop a judo programme and gather information to help improve its implementation, while the two institutional partners will help with communication and dissemination of the results. The programme will benefit more than 120 adolescents with ID with direct participation in judo programmes and more than 18 instructors who will participate in direct training during the programme, as well as more than 80 future instructors who will be able to receive training via the virtual platform.
