About Athletes Speakers
Athletes Speakers was a European project focused on supporting elite athletes in developing communication skills for their personal, professional and career transition pathways. The project recognised that athletes often need support to improve their public image, strengthen their role as positive role models and communicate their experiences, values and future ambitions more effectively.
The project developed, tested and implemented a tailor-made education and training programme designed to empower athletes through public speaking, storytelling and communication tools. Alongside the training programme, Athletes Speakers created a MOOC, specific video tutorials on a YouTube channel and a handbook with guidelines to support the implementation of the programme, aiming to increase athletes’ voices and support 56 active elite athletes in their transition from sport to life beyond sport.
Main Objectives
- Researched existing communication programmes focused on athletes;
- Created an innovative programme to develop athletes’ communication skills;
- Supported elite athletes in improving their public image and recognition as role models;
- Empowered athletes to communicate their stories, values and experiences;
- Developed an education and training programme tailored to athletes’ needs;
- Created a MOOC, video tutorials and a handbook with implementation guidelines;
- Raised awareness about the importance of athletes’ voices during career transition;
- Supported the sustainability and wider use of the Athletes Speakers programme.
